WeChat in China — Setup, Pay, Groups, Etiquette
WeChat (微信 Wēixìn) is the all-in-one app for messaging, calls, QR payments, city services, ride codes, food delivery, and more. For au pairs and students, it’s essential for staying in touch with host families, classmates, and local communities in Chengdu.
Account Setup (Step by Step)
- Download WeChat from your app store and select your language.
- Register with your mobile number (SMS code required). Keep this number active.
- Set your display name and a clear profile photo.
- Ask a friend to verify you if prompted (WeChat occasionally requests an existing user to confirm you).
- Backup your login device and enable two-step verification if available.
If you’ll change numbers later, add an email to your account now and keep recovery options updated.
Adding Contacts & Joining Groups
Ways to add friends
- Scan their QR code (Me → QR → show/scan).
- Search by WeChat ID or phone number.
- Use “People Nearby” only if you’re comfortable—toggle privacy accordingly.
Groups (WeChat “Group Chats”)
- Ask for an invite link or QR from your class, dorm, or agency.
- Pin key groups (host family, school) and mute the noisy ones.
- Enable “Save to Contacts” for important groups so they don’t disappear.
Messaging, Calls & Moments
- Chats: Text, voice notes, photos, location sharing; long-press a message → Translate.
- Voice/Video calls: Good Wi-Fi/data recommended; headphones help in cafés.
- Moments: Share photos and updates; adjust who can view via Privacy → Moments.
- Favorites: Save IDs, addresses, QR codes in Me → Favorites for quick access.
WeChat Pay — Getting Ready
Many shops, metros, and even vending machines accept WeChat Pay. Setup differs by user:
With a Mainland Bank Account
- Go to Me → Services/Wallet (or “Money”).
- Complete real-name verification (passport details as requested).
- Link your mainland debit card and set a 6-digit Pay PIN.
- Enable Auto-deduct for transit/ride codes if you use them.
Without a Mainland Account
- Some users can add international cards for in-app/QR payments (availability varies).
- Alternatively, use QR ride codes, single-journey tickets, or pay by card/cash where supported.
- Keep a backup plan (transit card, small cash) for places that don’t accept foreign cards.
Policies and supported cards can change. Follow the in-app instructions for your region and read the fee/limit notes carefully.
Mini Programs You’ll Actually Use
- Metro Ride Code (乘车码): Scan in/out at gates (see our “QR Metro Payment” page).
- Food delivery & groceries: Order to dorms/homestays; confirm building/door codes.
- City services: Bike share, hospital registrations, utility top-ups (city-dependent).
- Travel: Train tickets, taxis/ride-hailing, bike rentals.
Daily QR Life — Scan Like a Local
- Open WeChat → Discover → Scan (or pull down on home screen).
- Hold steady; increase brightness for difficult readers.
- For payments: confirm amount and merchant name → enter Pay PIN if asked.
- Save e-receipts/screenshots to a “Finance” album for reimbursements.
Privacy, Safety & Good Habits
- Profile privacy: Me → Settings → Privacy to limit who sees your Moments and phone number.
- Friend requests: Decline unknown adds; scammers often start with harmless small talk.
- Payments: Check merchant name and amount; never share your Pay PIN.
- Data & battery: Carry a small power bank if you rely on QR payments/ride codes.
- Backups: Export chat history you need; enable cloud/contact recovery options.
Etiquette & Useful Mandarin
- Adding someone: “可以加一下微信吗?” (Can I add your WeChat?)
- Group intros: Brief hello + purpose; avoid spamming stickers at night.
- Paying back: Use Transfer or AA收款 (split bill) for fairness.
- Common buttons: 扫码 (scan) / 收付款 (receive & pay) / 转账 (transfer) / 乘车码 (ride code)
Troubleshooting (Quick Fixes)

- Use voice notes; speak slowly and clearly.
FAQ — WeChat
Is WeChat mandatory in China?
It’s not legally mandatory, but it’s the most practical way to communicate, pay, and access services.
Can I use it without data?
Basic features need internet. Some ride codes cache briefly, but don’t rely on it—carry data or find Wi-Fi.
Do I need a Chinese number?
A stable mobile number helps for verification and recovery. You can register with non-Mainland numbers, but features vary.
Is there a desktop version?
Yes—WeChat Web/Desktop for quick typing and file transfers. Login via QR from your phone.
