Account Setup (Step by Step)
- Download WeChat from your app store and select your language.
- Register with your mobile number (SMS code required). Keep this number active.
- Set your display name and a clear profile photo.
- Ask a friend to verify you if prompted (WeChat occasionally requests an existing user to confirm you).
- Backup your login device and enable two-step verification if available.
If you’ll change numbers later, add an email to your account now and keep recovery options updated.
Adding Contacts & Joining Groups
Ways to add friends
- Scan their QR code (Me → QR → show/scan).
- Search by WeChat ID or phone number.
- Use “People Nearby” only if you’re comfortable—toggle privacy accordingly.
Groups (WeChat “Group Chats”)
- Ask for an invite link or QR from your class, dorm, or agency.
- Pin key groups (host family, school) and mute the noisy ones.
- Enable “Save to Contacts” for important groups so they don’t disappear.
Messaging, Calls & Moments
- Chats: Text, voice notes, photos, location sharing; long-press a message → Translate.

With a Mainland Bank Account
- Go to Me → Services/Wallet (or “Money”).
- Complete real-name verification (passport details as requested).
- Link your mainland debit card and set a 6-digit Pay PIN.
- Enable Auto-deduct for transit/ride codes if you use them.
Without a Mainland Account
- Some users can add international cards for in-app/QR payments (availability varies).
- Alternatively, use QR ride codes, single-journey tickets, or pay by card/cash where supported.
- Keep a backup plan (transit card, small cash) for places that don’t accept foreign cards.
